Simple air fryer chocolate chip cookies are fantastic.
The air fryer resembles a wildly circulating fan oven, rapidly moving hot air around. This results in perfect cooking for items like potato wedges that require crispiness on the exterior.
Conversely, if you’re baking something like a cake that demands an even bake, adjustments are necessary.
In my opinion, the air fryer is excellent for cookies. It creates a lovely crisp on the tops, while the centers remain soft and chewy, precisely how I prefer my cookies.
However, it does require some technique, and you might need a few attempts to master it.

Why I Adore Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies
I believe these are the finest air fryer chocolate chip cookies (bias, I acknowledge!), and my affection stems from:
- They possess the ideal combination of a crispy edge and soft center texture, perfect alongside an afternoon hot chocolate or coffee.
- Utilizing chocolate chunks instead of chocolate chips delivers plenty of substantial bites of delectable chocolate.
- Chocolate chip cookies made in the air fryer are fantastic for baking with children.
- If you lack an oven, you can still whip up delicious cookies!
- Once you get the hang of it, creating chocolate chip cookies in the air fryer is incredibly simple.
Ingredients For Chocolate Chip Cookies
When crafting chocolate chip air fryer cookies, I utilize:
Unsalted Butter – Margarine can also be used, though butter is superior!
Light Brown Soft Sugar
Granulated Sugar – I enjoy the mix of brown and white sugar, but using all one or the other is fine if that’s what you have.
Egg
Golden Syrup
Vanilla Essence/Vanilla Extract
Plain Flour
Bicarbonate of Soda
Milk Chocolate – You can swap it for dark or a combination of both if that’s how you prefer your cookies.
You Will Also Require
The specifics of what you use and your method for air frying cookies will depend on the size of your air fryer and the shape of your basket. Adjustments may be necessary accordingly.
- Baking paper with perforations. I cut my own. It’s a square of reusable paper (affiliate link), with about 20-25 5mm(ish) holes cut at relatively even intervals.
- Air
- fryer with crisper tray – these can be purchased if you require them (affiliate link).
- Mixing bowl.
- Electric whisk. You can do it manually, but it’s simpler with an electric whisk (affiliate link).
- Sandwich bag and rolling pin to crush the chocolate.
- Small saucepan to melt the butter.
How to Prepare Chocolate Chip Cookies in an Air Fryer – Step-by-Step Guide
Comprehensive, simple-to-follow directions and measurements are available in the recipe card at the bottom of this article.
Step One
Gently melt the butter. I do this in a small saucepan on the stove, but you can opt for the microwave if that’s your preference.
Step Two
Put the chocolate squares in a large sandwich bag and hit with a rolling pin to create smaller, uneven fragments.
There are various methods to achieve this, but I truly enjoy the smashing!
Set aside.
Step Three
Combine the sugars and melted butter in a large mixing bowl and whisk until blended. I utilize an electric whisk on medium speed, which takes just seconds. It will take longer if you’re mixing manually.
Step Four
In a smaller bowl, blend the egg, vanilla, and syrup. The syrup may settle slightly, but that’s fine; just ensure it all gets poured into the egg mixture.
Step Five
Mix the egg mixture into the butter and sugar and whisk until combined. This also doesn’t take long.
Step Six
Add the flour and bicarb and whisk until blended smoothly.
Step Seven
Stir in the broken chocolate and whisk or fold until evenly distributed.
Step Eight
Refrigerate the cookie dough for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Step Nine
Once the dough is chilled, preheat the air fryer to 150 degrees and set for 11 minutes. This is for four rather large cookies.
If your air fryer differs in size, and you’re baking more or fewer cookies, you might need to modify the time and temperature accordingly.
The advantage of cooking in smaller batches is that you have a few tries to perfect it!
Step Ten
Form four golf ball-sized portions of dough and roll them.
Step Eleven
Place them on a square of baking paper with small holes cut into it.
Step Twelve
Flatten into rounds that are between 5mm and 1cm thick, ensuring there is a bit of space between them.
Step Thirteen
Carefully place them in the preheated air fryer. I gently lift the paper and slightly fold it to create a kind of cookie hammock.
Then, I drop it into the basket and give it a shake with the handle to distribute the paper evenly.
I find this the most effective way to avoid the risk of coming into contact with the inside of the basket with my hand or arm. You can see my method in this TikTok video.
Step Fourteen
Cook in the air fryer for 11 minutes.
Step Fifteen
Allow them to sit in the air fryer basket to solidify for 5-10 minutes before taking them out. If you try to remove them right away, they’ll be very delicate and may crumble.
Waiting also allows you to lift the paper out gently, again, without burns!
Step Sixteen
Repeat with the remaining dough. This recipe yields about 16 cookies.
Expert Tips for Ideal Chewy Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies
I’ve baked a multitude of cookies to perfect this recipe, so I have some suggestions!
However, keep in mind, I enjoy my cookies crunchy on the edges and soft and chewy in the center; if your preference differs, you will need to make adjustments.
- Cut holes in your baking paper. I create small holes (using scissors, but I truly wish I had utilized a hole punch!) in lines approximately 1 inch apart. This facilitates air circulation and ensures the bottoms of your cookies cook better.
- Avoid over-mixing.
- Press down, but ensure spacing. These cookies aren’t major spreaders, so you should press them down, but they will expand slightly.
- Let them remain in the air fryer basket for 5-10 minutes prior to removing them, or the bottoms may adhere.
- Gently peel away from the baking paper.
Serving Ideas
Air-fried chocolate chip cookies are delightful on their own with a warm beverage for an afternoon treat or an after-dinner dessert.
Alternatively, warm them up and serve with vanilla ice cream for the ultimate chocolate cookie indulgence!
Variations
There are several options for altering how you create air fryer chocolate chip cookies.
Utilize Chocolate Chips
I enjoy chocolate chunks, but you can also opt for chocolate chips without adjusting the recipe.
Air Fry for a Longer Duration for a Crunchy Cookie
If you favor a crunchier cookie, air fry for an additional 3-5 minutes.
Select Different Chocolate
Milk chocolate is fantastic, but dark, white, and even pink would also work wonderfully!
Modify Size
I shape golf ball-sized cookie dough portions for substantial cookies.
You can adjust the size bigger or smaller, based on your preferences and the dimensions of your air fryer. Ensure you modify the cooking time accordingly.
Leftovers
There’s no concept of leftover cookies! My air fryer cookie formulation never endures long enough!
Storage
In a closed container, your air fryer chocolate chip cookies will remain fresh for up to five days.
FAQ
Indeed, you can air fry chocolate chip cookies.
Whether you need to flatten cookies varies by the recipe. These require slight flattening, but not entirely; they will expand and flatten somewhat during cooking.
Yes, using parchment paper while air-frying cookies is advised. If possible, cut holes in your paper to allow air circulation.
You may use foil in the air fryer as long as something is placed on top to weigh it down. However, baking paper is preferable for cookies.
You can place frozen cookie dough in the air fryer. Freeze in flattened discs and air fry at 150 degrees C for 15 minutes before checking.
