Reasons to adore this instant pot garlic rice recipe

Making this side dish in the instant pot is speedy, and you can have flawlessly cooked rice from the kitchen to the dining table in less than 20 minutes. While the instant pot does require a few moments to build pressure, the actual cooking duration for rice is 6 minutes with a pressure release time of 5 minutes. Thus, while the instant pot operates, you can proceed to prepare the various accompaniments to your side dish.

Only a few ingredients are necessary to transform a basic rice dish into a delectable experience.

Basic pantry essentials: Rice is a fundamental ingredient found in many households, adored by many, and who doesn’t enjoy garlic? Whether fresh or dried, garlic is a vital ingredient in every kitchen.

Things you will require

To prepare this delectable and satisfying rice dish, gather the following essential ingredients.

  • Long-grain basmati rice: I used golden sella basmati rice, but you can swap it with pure basmati rice, brown rice, or jasmine rice. Be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • Fresh garlic: For this recipe, using fresh garlic yields the best flavor; garlic granules won’t provide the same taste.
  • Olive oil: This is utilized to sauté the garlic; it can be replaced with butter.
  • Salt according to taste
  • Fresh parsley
  • Water: Replace with low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth. For the type of rice used in this recipe, you will require a 1 1/2:1 water-to-rice ratio.

How to prepare garlic in instant pot garlic

Rinse the rice under cool water several times until the water appears clear. Drain and set aside.

Activate your instant pot and select ‘Sauté’ mode on low. Add olive oil, and once it’s heated, introduce the chopped garlic and sauté for a few seconds until the garlic is lightly browned. Monitor closely to avoid burning the garlic.

Introduce the washed and drained rice to the pot and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Pour in the water or low-sodium vegetable/chicken broth and season with salt.

Close the instant pot lid, seal the valve, then select ‘High pressure’ (manual) mode and set the timer for 6 minutes. After the cooking cycle concludes, allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes, then carefully quick-release any remaining pressure.

Open your instant pot, add chopped parsley (if desired), and fluff the rice with a fork or spatula, then serve hot. Enjoy!

Variations

Create garlic butter rice: Prepare this using my stovetop garlic butter rice recipe while following the instant pot instructions above.

Garlic lemon rice: Incorporate freshly squeezed lemon juice and zest into the rice while still hot for a delightful zing.

Coconut garlic rice: Substitute the broth or water with coconut milk (not coconut water) for a fragrant and creamy consistency. Follow my instant pot coconut rice recipe to create this variation.

Spicy garlic rice: Add a dash of red chili flakes or to your liking to the oil while sautéing the garlic.

Storing and reheating rice

Leftover garlic rice can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days in a sealed container.

To reheat, simply microwave for 60 seconds to 2 minutes (depending on the amount) or until piping hot. Alternatively, you can also reheat the rice on the stovetop over medium-low heat. Add about 2 tablespoons of water to a cup of cooked rice and warm until it reaches piping hot.
