Shamrock Shake Recipe
If you’re a fan of Aeros peppermint chocolate, then you’ll adore the Shamrock shake. It’s minty, creamy, silky, rich yet not overly sweet. This delightful milkshake is ideal for St. Patrick’s Day or any occasion when you wish to feel fortunate or indulge in something unique because you deserve it.
Recently, I sampled the newly released Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s (UK), and I have to confess, I felt somewhat disappointed. The mint taste was slight, almost as if they played it too conservatively. The hue was also faint; where’s the green? Here, we celebrate bold mint tastes and colors!
Allow me to show you how to create a homemade Shamrock Shake that’s even superior. This recipe represents my interpretation of how an exceptional milkshake ought to taste.
Today, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we will be crafting a traditional, vivid green, minty shake. With only a handful of simple ingredients, you can recreate this festive delight at home anytime, transforming a limited edition favorite into an everyday pleasure.
Reasons to cherish this recipe
- You can prepare this classic beverage at home in under 5 minutes throughout the year. There’s no need to wait until it’s available at McDonald’s. Enjoy it all year long.
- An economical treat to whip up at home, especially when making it for the family.
- Cool, tasty, and easily customizable
What you will require
Vanilla ice cream: Alternatively, substitute regular ice cream and vanilla extract, which is what I did for this recipe.
Whole milk
Green food coloring
Mint extract: This is not the same as peppermint, but it can be used interchangeably if you can’t locate the latter. Mint sugar syrup may also work.
Mint leaves: This is optional; you’ll only need a few for this shake. I included it to amplify the mint flavor.
Whipped cream for garnishing

In a blender, combine the vanilla ice cream, mint extract, milk, food coloring, and mint leaf (if desired) and blend until smooth.
-
Pour the mixture into a glass and top with whipped cream. Serve and relish!
- My food coloring is sourced from Aldi (It’s not the finest in terms of color intensity). After trials, I found that 1 ½ to 2 teaspoons yield the optimal shade. If using unfamiliar brands, start with 3-4 drops and modify it according to your taste.
- If you are using plain ice cream, incorporate 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract before blending.
