Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
I don’t always adore blue cheese, but I adore this blue cheese dressing. It’s an excellent entry point to blue cheese if you’ve been reluctant to sample it, and a guaranteed hit if you appreciate it. You can opt for a milder cheese, as I prefer, or a more robust blue cheese for a deeper dressing.
This blue cheese dressing formula is rich but not overly heavy, pleasantly tangy, and resembles the finest restaurant variants, owing to the fresh chives and garlic. It’s akin to my Easy Blue Cheese Dip, but prepared to drizzle over leafy greens.
Salads are my forte, and my assortment of dressings was lacking without this traditional option. It’s far superior to store-bought!
Blue Cheese Dressing Components
You’ll discover the complete recipe below. Here are the straightforward components you’ll require to create this creamy and savory dressing.
Sour cream
Sour cream provides a silky, tangy foundation for this dressing. No mayo required!
Crumbled blue cheese
The ideal blue cheese for dressing relies on your palate. I lean towards a gentler blue cheese, like Gorgonzola dolce or Danish Blue. Enthusiasts of blue cheese might select a more potent option, such as Roquefort. Typically, a creamier blue cheese with less veining will taste milder than a hard, crumbly cheese with extensive marbling.
Buttermilk
Buttermilk injects extra tanginess and thins out the dressing’s consistency. Opt for genuine buttermilk if possible, as the flavor payoff is worthwhile (you can always whip up pancakes with leftovers). Alternatively, swap in milk with an extra squeeze of lemon juice.
Lemon juice
Fresh lemon provides a bright kick that makes this dressing taste invigorating.
Chives and garlic
Finely sliced chives and minced fresh garlic introduce an enticing allium essence. If you lack chives, green onions can be utilized instead (primarily the green sections).
Salt and pepper
No salad dressing is finished without salt to offset the bitterness of the greens. Conclude with a generous amount of freshly ground pepper, adjusted to taste.

The salad depicted in my images showcases a wedge of romaine lettuce drizzled with blue cheese dressing, halved cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced radish, and a dusting of bread crumbs and extra chives. It’s a fantastic mix.

Blue Cheese Dressing
Blue cheese dressing is a classic for a valid reason! Blue cheese injects some character into this decadently creamy, tangy dressing, while chives maintain its freshness. Recipe yields 1 ½ cups.
- In a small bowl, mix all of the components. Taste, and include another pinch of salt and/or several more twists of black pepper until it’s just right. For optimal flavor, allow the mixture to chill for 30 minutes before serving.
- Drizzle over your salad or cover and refrigerate for later. Leftovers can be preserved well in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
