Halloween Witch Fingers Shortbread Cookie Recipe
Halloween Witch Fingers Shortbread Cookies are rich, buttery shortbread treats, almond-clad fingernails perfect for Halloween festivities.
Who Wouldn’t Want To Enjoy Witch Fingers For Halloween?
I was raised in the 60s with Bewitched, that iconic show where Elizabeth Montgomery twinkled her nose and performed magic right amidst suburbia.
As a child, I was utterly captivated. A witch who could make household tasks disappear, meals materialize, all while maintaining an air of glamour? That was the type of sorcery I desired in my kitchen!
Naturally, witches have wandered through our fantasies eternally, showcased in numerous delightful children’s literature. From whimsical enchantresses to the splendidly sinister ones Disney created, they have always embraced the theatrical.
Yet it was Bette Midler, in Hocus Pocus, who captured my heart, dazzling, humorous, and just the perfect degree of spooky.
Witch Fingers: Just For The Fun!
Do you enjoy a good laugh during the haunting season? I certainly do. Humor is my preferred sentiment, if it even qualifies as such! (It turns out it does, an expressive sound of positive emotional states, as specialists assert. And I’m all for positivity.)
Thus, when Halloween approaches and my kitchen fills with the scent of butter and sugar, I can’t resist sprinkling in a touch of mischief. That’s when my Witch Finger Cookies make their entrance, buttery shortbread crafted into crooked, knobby fingers, adorned with almond “nails” that elicit giggles before taking a bite. They’re eerie, playful, and utterly delightful.
Because honestly, who wouldn’t want to munch on witch fingers during Halloween? Particularly when they taste like sheer enchantment.
Witch Fingers vs. Ladyfingers
Now, do not mix these Witch Fingers up with the delicate ladyfingers that politely reside inside a tiramisu. Ladyfingers are soft, airy delights that practically breathe “tea party.”
On the flip side, witch fingers are rebellious buttery shortbread, firm, crumbly, and decadently rich, the type of treat that crunches with audacity. If ladyfingers delicately sip from fine china, witch fingers guffaw over a cauldron with a drink of something stronger.
Shortbread Treats
Nevertheless, witches in Scotland faced a dreadful fate back in the 1700s. Scotland’s shortbread cookies surely provided a sweet remedy to cleanse the horrors of their past.
You should know that shortbread cookies hold their shape exceptionally well for pressing into forms with a cookie cutter or molding by hand to create charming designs.
My shortbread treats possess an added measure of richness to bind them together, crafted with both butter and mascarpone. Delicious!
How To Create Witch Finger Shortbread Cookies
My food processor is the most frequently utilized gadget in my kitchen, and believe me, I have three various sizes for different tasks.
I combine all the room temperature components in the food processor, mix vigorously, roll out, and begin shaping, or refrigerate for another time.
Initially, once rolled to about half an inch thick (no need for precision, remember…
these aren’t particular ladies), slice into strips 1/2 inch wide by 4 inches long.
Next, we shall mold into plump little cylinders, place your finger across each and press, round off the top and bottom, then embed a whole raw almond in the top for the fingernail.
Baking Or Freezing Shortbread Cookies
Ultimately, the cookies can be baked once shaped, and are set to serve, wrap as presents or freeze leftovers for a future occasion.
Nevertheless, they can also be kept in the refrigerator until ready to bake and freeze.
Just retain the witch fingernail (whole almond), for when you’re prepared to bake them.
They defrost rapidly and bake in merely about 15-18 minutes, and they are set for the Halloween celebration!
Halloween Treats
Who doesn’t appreciate Halloween treats? I’m not referencing the store-bought varieties, but rather an enjoyable selection of homemade Halloween goodies for both kids and adults. Here are just a handful of my other favored Scary Delicious Treats:
- Boos and Booze Halloween Dinner Party – absolutely a delightful dinner gathering for adults!
- Let’s Talk Pumpkin – how we yearn to adore pumpkin, even though it lacks intense flavor, thus we devised a pumpkin spice blend that allows pumpkin to aspire to be the star!
- Caramel Popcorn Balls – Two methods to create caramel popcorn balls; classic homemade caramel popcorn balls, or you can opt for store-bought caramel and popcorn.
Ingredients Needed
What renders these witchy delights so incredibly delectable? It’s all within the charm of simple, indulgent components.
- Butter undeniably is the core of any shortbread, that golden, melt-in-your-mouth enchantment that leaves a trace of richness long after the nibble.
- Mascarpone appears as the secret element that took everyone by surprise, contributing a soft creaminess that keeps the cookie tender and just a tad enigmatic.
- Sugar adds the shimmer and sweetness.
- Flour forms the robust shape (because a witch finger must maintain its structure, after all).
- Salt enlivens every flavor, like the flick of a wand at the perfect moment.
- Whole Almonds pressed into the tips for that spookily perfect “fingernail.” They toast in the oven to a delightful golden brown, a balanced mix of eerie and delicious.
Equipment Needed
Even witches require their equipment, and for these shortbread fingers, it’s less cauldron and broomstick, but rather baking sheet and mixer.
- Baking sheet pan serves as your spellcasting base, where all those buttery fingers align, prepared for their golden metamorphosis. It ensures even heat, so each “digit” bakes to the ideal blend of tender and crisp.
- Parchment paper acts as the invisible barrier that prevents sticking, no cookie left behind!
- Rolling pin assists in smoothing your dough into that ideal thickness, not too thick (unless aiming for ogre fingers), not too thin (we’re not crafting wands here).
- Pastry knife or small blade is perfect for cutting and shaping each finger with accuracy, as every witch deserves flawlessly manicured claws.
- Food Processor or Mixer unites the magic, creaming the butter, mascarpone, and sugar into that dreamy, velvety base before you introduce the flour and salt.
- The Oven, naturally, is the true chamber of alchemy, transforming your doughy spells into golden, edible mischief.
When the timer signals, and the delightful aroma of butter envelops the air, you’ll realize: your witch fingers are spellbindingly ready.
-
Cookie sheets
-
Parchment paper
-
Small butter knife
- 16 oz Unsalted Butter softened
- 8 oz Mascarpone soft
- 3/4 cup Sugar
- 3 1/2 cup All Purpose Flour extra for dusting
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Almond extract for a hint of almond
- 12-24 Raw whole almonds 1-per cookie
-
In a food processor or stand mixer, combine the softened butter, mascarpone, sugar, extract, and salt, then blend until creamy.
-
Incorporate the dry ingredients and whisk until a ball of dough forms.
-
Gradually add more flour until the dough no longer sticks to your fingers and forms a ball.
-
Roll the dough out between two sheets of parchment paper to approximately 1/2 inch thickness. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
Heat the oven to 350.
-
Place parchment paper on the cookie sheets.
-
Utilizing a sharp knife, slice the dough into strips about 4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Dipping the knife in cold water after a few cuts helps maintain clean slices.
-
Gently shape each strip into cylinders, resembling fingers, rounding the ends to give a soft edge.
-
Transfer each finger onto the prepared baking sheet.
-
Using raw, still brown almonds, press an almond on the end of each finger to resemble a fingernail.
-
With a butter knife or a toothpick, create wrinkles in the fingers.
-
Bake for 15-18 minutes, until golden brown.
-
Let cool and enjoy, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Allow to adjust to room temperature just before serving.
For a more ethnic witch, substitute 2 tablespoons of flour with cocoa powder in the witch finger cookie recipe for added color.
As an extra touch, raspberry or strawberry jam can be brushed around the nail bed before placing the almond, mimicking a bit of creepy blood!
