What is Irish coffee?

Irish coffee is a beverage composed of the classic mix of freshly brewed black coffee, smooth Irish whiskey (Read that part again, smooth!), lightly whipped cream, and a sweetener, typically sugar cubes or brown sugar.

This is a traditional hot cocktail that is both simple and quick to prepare. It doesn’t necessitate any special skills or bartending expertise. It is pure bliss and requires very little.

Where did it originate? A young man named Joe Sheridan, who worked as a chef during the 1940s, first crafted this drink for his restaurant patrons when the weather was dreadful.

How did it acquire its name? It is reported that an American who tasted the beverage inquired if it was Brazilian coffee, to which Joe replied, no, it is Irish coffee. Since then, there have been various adaptations of the original recipe.

Traditional Irish Coffee Ingredients

Smooth Irish whiskey

Brown sugar: this is the classic ingredient utilized but I replaced it with my homemade vanilla syrup since it contains brown sugar.

Brewed black coffee

Cold heavy cream (double cream)

How to create Irish coffee

Warm the mug: begin by using a heatproof glass or mug (230ml size), fill the mug with hot water and then set it aside while you brew the coffee. Allow it to sit for around two minutes so the mug gets thoroughly warmed. Discard the water.

Pour the brewed hot coffee into the mug, filling it about ¾ full.

Add brown sugar, sugar cubes, or sugar syrup then stir to combine. If using granulated sugar, mix until completely dissolved.

Incorporate the Irish whiskey and stir to blend.

Gently whip the cold heavy cream. Note that the cream should reach soft peaks but remain pourable.

Top the Irish coffee by pouring the whipped cream over the back of a spoon, allowing the cream to float and not mix with the coffee. Do not stir the coffee; sip through the cream. Enjoy!!!

Suggestions

If you enjoy cold brew, then prepare the Irish coffee with cold coffee and perhaps add some ice. You can use coffee cubes to prevent the cold beverage from being diluted.

Substitute the brown sugar or syrup with maple syrup or coconut sugar.

Replace the whipped cream with Irish cream to create this cocktail Irish coffee cream. No, don’t simply mix the cream directly into the coffee, trust me, it doesn’t have the same flavor.

If you are sensitive to caffeinated coffee, it is acceptable to utilize decaffeinated coffee for this recipe.

Use your favorite coffee for this recipe. I opted for a medium dark roast.

Adjust the amount of whiskey according to your preference. I used Jameson smooth Irish whiskey, but you can select any brand you prefer.

Finish off the drink by grating fresh nutmeg or chocolate shavings atop the cream.
