El Completo Italiano
I believe I’ve quite effectively made clear that I am not a fan of hot dogs in the hamburger versus hot dog debate, so when I do indulge, I desire A LOT of toppings. This implies that the El Completo hot dog from Chile is ideal for me! Not only does it feature one of my preferred foods on the planet, avocado, but it also boasts my other absolute favorite traditional hot dog garnish: sauerkraut. The El Completo is furthermore a delight for the eyes due to its stunning array of colors, and it’s filled with taste from a medley of toppings that create a flawlessly balanced bite. This hot dog will prompt you to reconsider how you should be adorning your dogs this summer; there are numerous possibilities beyond ketchup and mustard!
1. El Completo
The title translates to the “complete” or “entire,” and it refers to the multitude of extra toppings on the hot dog.
2. Customize!
As usual, these toppings, in both quantity and combination, are entirely adjustable to your preference and taste. Feel free to add more or fewer of whichever you desire! There are a plethora of diverse variations of the El Completo in Chile as well, so what you see here is my individual favorite rendition.
3. Toppings Galore
The assortment of toppings on the El Completo might appear unconventional at first, but the flavors are truly in ideal harmony on your palate. You have creamy avocado, zesty, fermented sauerkraut, a savory, salty hot dog, fresh, succulent tomatoes, rich Kewpie mayo, and finally, hot sauce for an extra kick and zest!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Instructions
-
In a small dish, combine the onions and sprinkle with a generous pinch of salt. Mix with a spoon and let rest for 5-10 minutes.
-
In a medium bowl, scoop out the flesh of the avocado and transfer it to the bowl. Season with salt, pepper, lime juice, and hot sauce, and mash with a fork until the avocado is fully smashed. Cover and chill in the refrigerator.
-
Preheat a grill, grill pan, or stainless steel skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil, and once it shimmers, place the hot dogs in and sear for about 5 minutes, turning to char all sides slightly. Move to a plate until you’re ready to assemble.
-
While the hot dogs cook, steam the buns. Wrap them gently in damp paper towels and place them on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 30 seconds or until the buns are warm and pliable.
-
To serve, place a hot dog in each bun. Layer seasoned onions on one half of each dog, followed by tomatoes on the other half. Then distribute the sauerkraut evenly in the center and top with avocado mash. Drizzle with mayonnaise and chili sauce, if desired. Serve right away.
