No elaborate gadgets or tools are required to create your cold brew at home. I repurpose large jars (like mayonnaise containers) to prepare my cold brew coffee and tea.

You only require 2 components: tea of your preference (loose-leaf, sachet, or cold infusion) and water. How straightforward can it be?

It is entirely hands-free; after combining tea with water, just place it in the fridge or on the countertop to steep and infuse magnificently.

Ideal tea for cold brew

The reality is, you can cold brew all varieties of tea; however, the caliber of the tea leaves will dictate how flavorful and smooth the tea will taste. This leads me to this next point: while any tea can be brewed, it’s advisable to start with the kind you are familiar and comfortable with tasting.

For today’s recipe, or should I say guide, I’m demonstrating how to use 3 varieties of tea:

  1. Assam loose leaf (black tea)
  2. Green tea
  3. Twining cold infusion tea (flavored tea)

All the above create delicious cold brew teas in their distinct ways. They have varying flavors but utilize the same brewing techniques. I know many argue that green tea makes the finest cold brew, but ultimately, it comes down to individual preference.

For instance, if you find it difficult to drink plain water, consider adding your chosen cold infusion tea to it for added flavor. This will also motivate you to consume more water to remain hydrated.

If you adore iced tea, you can opt for green tea, jasmine tea, Assam, or hibiscus. These tea varieties can be easily flavored with lemon, lime, orange, or other citrus choices. Additional options for enhancements include fresh mint leaves, raspberries, and cucumber slices.

Necessary items

Your chosen tea, which may include teabags/sachets or loose leaf.

Recycled glass jar, a water container, BPA-free bottle, or a specialized cold brew bottle or

Infusion teapots or French press (caffettiera) and

Coffee filter paper for exceptionally smooth tea: this is optional if you used large loose tea leaves or tea sachets (Lipton, Yorkshire tea, Tetley, Twining, etc.). You could also utilize cheesecloth, but be cautious, as some minute tea particles might seep into the tea.

Small hole strainer: this is ideal for straining.

Steps to prepare cold brew tea

Now for the easy part: place teabags/sachets or loose tea leaves in a jar, fill it with cold filtered water (bottled water), and set it in the fridge or on the countertop to steep overnight for 8 to 12 hours. If using cold infusing teabags, adhere to the instructions on the packaging.

Strain the tea or remove the teabags as necessary and serve as desired. Enjoy!

Tea to water ratio for loose tea leaves or teabags

This is contingent on how strong you prefer your tea; personally, I utilize one teabag for ¾ cup (around 6 ounces) and 2 teaspoons of loose leaf for 1 cup (250ml) of water. If the tea is too intense, dilute it with water until the strength suits you. Alternatively, use 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of water, but I find it too light, which is why I double the amount used.

Storage suggestions

Keep the tea in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
