Easy Sauteed Cabbage Recipe - The Dinner Bite

Sautéed cabbage is an easy and rapid cabbage dish that takes roughly 15 minutes to prepare. Shredded cabbage sautéed in olive oil, butter, garlic salt, and pepper. This scrumptious side will alter your perception of this vegetable permanently. Pair it with honey garlic pork chops or any other protein for a fulfilling meal. Let me demonstrate how I prepare this simple sautéed cabbage recipe.

While I won’t claim to be a huge admirer of cabbage, you can catch me occasionally whipping up this sautéed cabbage. I appreciate that it is nutritious, low in carbs, and when served with protein, it becomes a complete meal.

Three dishes I frequently prepare with cabbage include coleslaw, wraps, and of course, in today’s recipe, sautéed cabbage. There was a time I attempted this cabbage recipe for an entire week along with roasted chicken as meal prep. I shared it on my Instagram account and was amazed by the number of people who desired the recipe. I say “amazed” because I didn’t expect anyone to appreciate cabbage that much compared to other vegetables.

Besides the methods of consuming and utilizing cabbage that I mentioned earlier, my other preferred way to prepare cabbage is this stovetop technique. Sautéed cabbage is effortless to make and comes together in 15 minutes. While I relish this cabbage recipe, another aspect I find soothing is the chopping or should I say shredding of the cabbage itself. Before I get too carried away, today’s post is a brief one to illustrate how to make sautéed cabbage, so let’s jump right into it.

What you’ll require to prepare sautéed cabbage

This recipe is so straightforward; you’ll need just a few ingredients to create it.

Cabbage: I generally prefer to use shredded white cabbage, i.e., green cabbage. I seldom use purple cabbage, but feel free to do so if that’s what you have. Other alternatives include savoy cabbage, which I adore for its color and texture. Depending on your serving size, one small head of cabbage can conveniently feed four people.

Butter and Olive oil: I enjoy utilizing both, especially since the butter infuses wonderful flavor into the sautéed cabbage. I recommend using high-quality butter. For the olive oil, please opt for light olive oil, as the aroma of extra virgin olive oil can dominate this uncomplicated dish.

Salt and pepper: I used ground black pepper, but you can also utilize red pepper flakes if that’s what you have.

Additional ingredients you could incorporate into your sautéed cabbage include:

Chopped onions, shredded carrots, garlic, leeks, or bacon, just to name a few. You may also add your preferred spices and herbs.

How To Prepare Sautéed Cabbage

Place a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and butter, and warm until heated.

Introduce the cabbage and stir to combine. Cabbage takes time to wilt, so you’ll need a bit of patience before noticing any changes. Alternatively, cook the cabbage in batches and adjust olive oil and butter to taste.

After approximately 5 minutes of stirring, season with salt and pepper, mixing to incorporate. Leave the cabbage undisturbed for an additional 2 to 3 minutes before stirring again. After about 10 minutes, the cabbage will begin to soften and brown.

Cease stirring and allow the cabbage to brown for another 2 to 3 minutes, but ensure it doesn’t burn. Taste to check if it meets your preferences at this stage, adjusting pepper and salt as necessary. Finally, stir to combine, remove from heat, and serve warm.
