Homemade Pumpkin Spice Blend

Crafting your own pumpkin spice mixture is the simplest spice blend to combine with seasonings you likely already possess in your cupboard!

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Blend Is The Finest

Pumpkin Spice Is The Fragrance Of Fall

Pumpkin spice serves as fall’s distinctive fragrance, with cinnamon’s gentle embrace, ginger’s lively kick, allspice and cloves enriching the ambiance, and nutmeg conveying a sense of nostalgia.

In harmony, they evoke the sensation of crisp leaves underfoot, the glow of candlelight against the early dusk, and the warmth of a kitchen where delectable treats are being prepared.

And as October fades and November arrives, this uncomplicated blend transforms into more than just taste; it becomes a smile in a mug, a warm embrace in a slice of pie, and the spirit of fall encapsulated before winter arrives.

The Unique Spice Mixture That Delightfully Brings Smiles

Pumpkin spice seamlessly integrates itself into the core of autumn cuisine and baking. Naturally, our thoughts first drift to pumpkin pie, where cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves elevate ordinary pumpkin purée into a festive creation.

Yet, the enchantment doesn’t conclude there. A dash of pumpkin spice elevates pancakes and waffles into cozy weekend brunches, infuses muffins and quick breads with fall flavors, and provides cookies a fragrant warmth that pairs seamlessly with coffee or tea.

Incorporate it into lattes or hot cocoa, sprinkle it on roasted nuts, mix it into oatmeal, or even whip it into cream for a pie and pudding topping. From savory pumpkin soups infused with spice to luxurious cheesecakes, this single blend delivers autumn’s warmth to everything it encounters.

The Hues Of Fall Remind Us Of Pumpkin Spice

Pumpkin Spice Is What Breates Life Into Pumpkin Flavor

Pumpkin is merely a type of squash, devoid of the exotic spices that render everything ‘pumpkin-flavored.’ That cherished pumpkin we believe we adore is truly enhanced by the tastes of: cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, and even white pepper.

Creating your own pumpkin spice blend, using many of the beloved spices likely residing in your cupboard, allows you to highlight those that you favor most!

Without the exotic historical aroma of Pumpkin Spice making its annual return every September, diverting my thoughts from the sun-drenched days of summer, I would likely lament throughout the winter!

Pumpkin Everything!

From pies to candles (which may surprise you), coffee to seltzers, and the vibrant orange spheres appearing everywhere, I quickly recognized that pumpkins possess a charm akin to Cinderella’s carriage!

For me, it often boiled down to the hue, trying to distract myself from the sun that will soon chill.

I found myself pondering, ‘what is it precisely that pumpkins do for me every September’.

Pumpkin Patch

Since the moment I welcomed my first child, up to today with multiple grandchildren, a visit to a nearby farm or market to choose a preferred ‘orange sphere’ marks the beginning of Fall for our family.

These pumpkin patch adventures serve not just as special occasions and ideal photo opportunities but also the joy reflected in everyone’s eyes creates a delightful atmosphere.

Naturally, the delightful scents that linger at every turn, enticing me to inhale deeply, help soften the heartache of missing my cherished summer sunlight.

Even those enchanting white pumpkins, resembling bleached pumpkins, are capturing my interest increasingly.

Is it due to their appearance, as if they could transform into a horse-drawn carriage, or is it the pumpkin spice candle lit beside them?

Pumpkin Spice Aromatherapy

The vapor that ascends from a Pumpkin Latte coffee, the aroma of a pumpkin pie baking in the oven, echoes that same fragrance found in my pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, or pumpkin waffles.

Stepping away from the kitchen to your preferred spa or skincare counter; hmm, that fragrance is present there too, and nothing is cooking there, at least we hope not!

What is that scent, if it isn’t (in fact) the essence of a pumpkin?

Homemade Pumpkin Aroma?

That scent? It’s straightforward; it consists of Cardamom, Nutmeg, Cloves, Allspice, Ginger, Cinnamon, and occasionally Orange Zest.

Oh certainly, I rationally realize that pumpkin spice aroma is completely unrelated to a pumpkin since every chef understands that pumpkins have virtually no fragrance.

Nevertheless, during fall, we relish the numerous warm-scented spices we utilize in cooking, so let’s head to our pantry, extract some spices that most of us commonly store away there, and create our own Pumpkin Spice Mixture!

Once our pumpkin spice mixture is prepared, we should incorporate it into many other dishes besides pumpkin pie!

Pie Season Desires A Remarkable Homemade Spice Blend

DIY Pumpkin Spice Mixture

Why should we craft our own spice mixture?

Firstly, and most crucial, just like preparing your own pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, or pumpkin hummus (what, you’ve never tasted pumpkin hummus?), you are fully aware of the contents. And I appreciate that!

The second advantage of creating your own spice mixture is that it proves to be significantly more budget-friendly.

Pumpkin spice mixture consists of spices that we frequently purchase for other dishes and leave dormant in the pantry for the rest of the year.

Processing Whole Spices

If you happen to be quite passionate about ‘DIY’ items, like I am, you might take this a step further; toast and grind whole nutmeg, cinnamon, or cloves into a powder.

Grind your nutmeg? Why not!

Those little nutmeg seeds are merely lingering on your shelf year after year, awaiting a little zest atop your ‘occasional’ Creme Brûlée.

Or those cinnamon sticks?

Did you merely acquire them to stir a winter cocktail, or for holiday crafting?

  • Throw those sticks into a grinder and inhale!
  • Cardamom pods; grind and sift them.
  • Allspice berries; grind and sift them.
  • White pepper, cloves, you name it. Alternatively, omit any spices you prefer less and add an abundance of the spices you adore.
The Fragrant Spices That Create Pumpkin Spice Mixture

Homemade Pumpkin Pie

From mid-October until the conclusion of December, we are all either baking or purchasing pumpkin pies.

Can’t get enough! Not to sound presumptuous, but genuinely, My Pumpkin Pies are unparalleled!

Why? Multiple reasons.

Firstly, of course, I prepare them with my Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Mixture, both in the crust and the pumpkin custard.

Secondly, I roast my own farm-fresh pumpkins and create several mini pies, freezing whatever pumpkin is left for future pumpkin recipes.

Thirdly, and this is the most exceptional part; when I roll out my Homemade Spiced Pie Crust, I keep the scraps to craft a cookie that bakes atop the pie.

Talk about an extravagant dessert! You truly must experience them; they are extraordinary!
